You are currently in one of the biggest choice points of opportunity you’ll ever come across in your lifetime.
You might have expected a job you couldn’t refuse… an invitation to an event that would put you in elite company… or perhaps getting in on the ground-floor of an investment opportunity.
While those are undoubtedly rare, this temporary time-out for non-essential businesses and social distancing has you on a precipice of possibility.
In physics, it’s referred to as a “choice point” -- a branching or forking that throws the window of opportunity wide open.
Now, there’s only one problem in a situation like this.
As the world gets dipped into chaos and uncertainty reigns, it can be hard enough to see the opportunity in front of you, much less think you can do anything about it.
What has been made clear throughout history and by way of physics is that these moments of the greatest stress are the moments when the greatest change can happen.
This is what you must keep in mind while the mass media creates messages of despair. Rather than focusing on how the world is being affected, focus on how people are changing for the better.
Thankfully, you won’t have to search hard. There are many entities already searching for the positive and they’ve highlighted how first responders, teachers, and the average person are stepping up to create smiles however possible.
Yes, it is just common, good advice, to find the bright side wherever possible. However, it’s probably more important than you realize.
It’s often thought that you aren’t able to make significant change until you hit rock bottom -- until everything has gone so wrong that it can’t possibly get any worse.
The good news is the world has already created this situation for you. At first glance it may not seem like it, but you are in the best position to affect change right now.
But you absolutely must maintain that sense of positivity. You must recognize this as the ultimate opportunity.
That doesn’t mean you have to always look on the sunny side and that you can’t feel anger or sadness. Those are normal emotions and it’s important to recognize them when you feel them. It’s only when you dwell on these emotions that you’re unable to recognize the opportunities for happiness in front of you that causes problems.
These problems with emotions grow. Specifically, they adversely affect your health.
Study after study has shown that staying positive, even in the midst of a crisis, makes staying healthy a lot easier.
In your body, emotional wellness shows itself as…
…and much, much more.
More importantly, in a positive state, you’re better able to find what’s important to you. In these situations, a study found, when you search out what’s meaningful to you, you’re better able to make a change. You’re able to stay hopeful and motivated rather than getting defensive or overwhelmed and thinking change isn’t possible.
For example, if you’re trying to lose weight, the study showed there was a much higher rate of success when people reflected on the importance of being there for their families before hearing they needed to walk every day. It also lit up the brain’s reward pathways.
When the participants didn’t think about the true importance of losing weight, they got angry and didn’t even try exercising.
